| About the Chihuahua |
| Mom started raising this wonderful breed in 1998 after her three kids moved out. She got the empty nest syndrome and bought a chihuahua female from a local breeder and was hooked from there. Sadly, though that little girl passed away the summer of 2003. The chihuahua originated from the mexican state Chihuahua. Chihuahua's come in a variety of colors. According to the AKC chihuahua standard chihuahuas are graceful, alert, swift-moving little dogs with a saucy expression, compact, and with terrier-like qualities of temperment. There is the long hair chihuahua & the smooth coat chihuahua ( which is short hair ). Chihuahuas usually weigh between 2 to 6 lbs. Mom's chihuahuas like to sleep with her and my step-dad at night and bury themselves under the covers. Some common health problems in chihuahuas are Patellar Luxation and Hypoglycemia. Patellar Luxation has the potential to debilatate the chihuahua. This is when the kneecap slips out of position and causes the chihuahua to hold its rear leg up for several steps at a time. Hypoglycemia is a disorder of the central nervous system that is caused by low blood sugar. Symptoms include sleepiness, weakness, and loss of appetite and coordination. If this occurs and the chihuahua is awake feed him/her food with sugar in it or you can add Karo syrup. If the chihuahua is unconscious rub Karo syrup on their gums and seek medical attention, because this can be life threatening. The molera, is a common trait in many well-bred and healthy chihuahuas. It can be felt as a soft spot of various sizes on the top of the chihuahua's head. Sixteen percent close by the time they reach the age of one and one and a half. Eventually, about 50% close by the age of three. The molera does not predispose chihuahuas to hydrocephalus. |
